Victim Support Scotland (VSS) can provide training for you, suitable for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). At Victim Support Scotland, our focus is to enhance and improve direct services to people affected by crime in Scotland. Courses include Impact of Crime, Domestic Abuse and Victims of Sexual Crime.

Training in organisations

VSS is a member of the CPD Certification Service, providing recognised independent CPD accreditation compatible with global CPD principles. The Learning & Development Team designs and delivers tailored CPD training courses to help your organisation better meet the needs of people affected by crime. We can deliver a short introduction session or presentation, a half-day course or a full-day course, based on your particular needs. You can contact us to discuss the requirements of your organisation and which topics you may wish to cover.

We have worked with a number of organisations to design and deliver bespoke training courses in the following areas:

  • Raise awareness of the impact of crime on the individual, family and wider community
  • Communicating appropriately and considering how best to respond to needs of people affected by crime within your job remit
  • The journey of a victim through the criminal justice system, looking at each stage of the journey and the effects it can have on victims & witnesses
  • The key provisions of the Victims & Witnesses (Scotland) Act 2014 and other relevant legislation
  • Crime type specific training such as Domestic Abuse and Victims of Sexual Crimes.

Our training is interactive, using practical scenarios and situations. We aim to provide participants with information and best practice on how to respond effectively and sensitively to the needs of victims and witnesses of crime.

Victim Support Scotland deliver CPD accredited Impact of Crime training courses.  The course contains two modules focussing on the impact of the crime and communication skills required to communicate effectively with a victim or witness.

By the end of this course the learner will be able to:

  • Identify the physical, social, emotional & financial impact of crime on an individual
  • Analyse the factors that contribute to an individual’s recovery
  • Describe the ripple effect of crime and how it can affect family, friends & communities
  • Summarise key stages of the victim’s journey through the Criminal Justice System
  • State the key provisions of the Victims & Witnesses Act 2014
  • Identify the different elements of effective communication
  • Demonstrate good practice when conveying information to victims/witnesses of crime
  • Identify and overcome potential communication barriers when working with victims/witnesses of crime
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the three core conditions of helping

Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse

This CPD certified training course aims to provide participants with an awareness of the impact domestic abuse has on victims and witnesses. Participants attending this course will gain increased knowledge, skills and confidence to engage with victims and witnesses of domestic abuse.

In this course participants will explore the impact of domestic abuse on victims, witnesses, families and the community as a whole.  Participants will value and grasp the complexities of this crime, including types of abuse, individuals’ reaction to the experiences of domestic abuse, the factors which affect those reactions, and the challenges of reporting to the police.  A domestic abuse victim’s journey through the Criminal Justice System will be examined, key legislation discussed in regards to the rights of victims and witnesses of domestic abuse and civil measures that may be necessary to protect the safety of the victim and family.

By the end of this course the learner will be able to:

Explore myths and stereotypes surrounding Domestic Abuse and compare them to current national statistics.

  • Identify the types and stages of abuse
  • Explain how Domestic Abuse is investigated and prosecuted
  • Identify the rights of Domestic Abuse victims
  • Identify effective personal safety and guidelines when engaging with victims of Domestic Abuse.

Victims of Sexual Crime

This CPD certified training course aims to provide participants with an awareness of the impact of sexual crime on victims and witnesses. Participants attending this course will gain increased knowledge, skills and understanding of the effects of sexual crime.

In this course participants will explore the impact of sexual crimes on victims, witnesses, families and the community as a whole.  Participants will value and grasp the complexities of this crime, consider myths and social attitudes surrounding sexual crimes, and reflect on statistical information from Police Scotland and Scottish Crime and Justice Surveys. Participants will review the types of charges for sexual crime, and follow the journey of the victim from crime reporting, medical and forensic examination, through the stages of the legal process.  Participants will consider the key challenges sexual crime victims and witnesses face in the criminal justice system.

By the end of this course the learner will be able to:

  • Look at myths and social attitudes towards Sexual Crime
  • Review legal definitions and current statistical information about rape and sexual assault
  • Identify behaviours, responses and needs in the immediate aftermath
  • Examine what a medical & forensic examination following a sexual crime entails
  • Explore the challenges to report the crime to the police
  • Identify the stages of the legal process once a decision to report has been made, and how these impact the victim
  • Explain to the victim what is expected of them as a witness at court
  • Examine the rights and entitlements of sexual crimes victims before, during and after a trial
  • Explore the impact of trauma and historical sexual abuse

Learning & Development has always been of great importance to Victim Support Scotland.

We aim to provide our staff and volunteers with the confidence, knowledge and skills necessary to deliver a consistent, quality service to people who are affected by crime.

Committed to developing our people

Our Learning and Development team design and deliver an extensive range of learning interventions to all our staff and volunteers.  We are committed to developing and increasing the knowledge and skills of our staff and volunteers to enable them to provide our services to victims and witnesses of crime.

As a new volunteer or staff member for VSS we will provide you with comprehensive learning and development to support you undertake your role with us and make a difference for people affected by crime.

We offer foundation training to all new staff and volunteers as well as advanced level courses such as on Domestic Abuse, Victims of Sexual Crimes, Support After Murder and Witness Service Advanced.
